Piano Moving

Your piano is a fine instrument and  worthy of the utmost care in its transportation to its new home.  The piano is comprised of over 10,000 components that are very sensitive to vibration and impact .  For the safety of your investment it is of the utmost importance  that your piano be handled by a experienced and trained piano moving professional.  Many piano owners have chosen to move their pianos themselves only to incur more expenses in repairs then they would have saved.  Another pitfall is to combine your piano move with other furniture by a furniture moving company.  While most furniture moving companies profess to possess the equipment and be capable of transporting your piano, too often the low cost laborers of the furniture moving crews have a little or no experience in moving pianos due to the high turnover rate of these employees.  Pianos require very specialized moving equipment and experienced piano moving professionals in order to avoid expensive or irreparable damage.

When contracting a piano moving company it is important to keep the following questions in mind.

  1. Be sure to be forthright regarding all details of your piano move.  Be prepared to tell the company The type and size of the piano, the pick-up and delivery location, any steps, stairways, storage, difficult terrain or encumbrances that may be involved in the move. Better a firm quote in the beginning rather than up charges the day of the move.

  2. Request a firm price quote for the described move and ask if this includes any and all charges.

  3. Ask if the company specialize in piano moving.

  4. Ask how long the company has been in business.

  5. Ask how many years experience the actual piano moving crew that will do the move has.

  6. Ask if the company is insured and bonded and if the crew will have a copy of their insurance declaration document at the time of the move.

  7. If storage will be a part of the move, ask if the piano will be stored in a climate controlled environment.  This is imperative!

  8. Ask the number of crew members that will be present at the move.  Two experienced piano movers is the average crew size for vertical and baby grand piano moves without stairs or unusual encumbrances.  Additional crew members may be required for grand pianos, concert grand's, stairways or more difficult moves.

  9. When you schedule your piano move with  a company, be sure to confirm your personal information and telephone numbers, addresses of pickup and delivery, the date and time of the scheduled move and the total cost for the move.

  10. When the crew arrives, allow them the freedom to direct the move of the piano as they see fit.  They have the experience and what seems to be the best way may not actually be.
