Digital Pianos

Digital pianos are fully electronic instruments that send sound signals, either sampled or synthesized to speaker(s)  which in turn move sound waves to our ear.  over the years, digital pianos have been considered less acceptable among the classical arts and more acceptable within more contemporary forums.  Although the digital piano has developed significantly with technological advances, most often is not preferred as a primary piano due to its slightly inferior tone and less dynamic control over the keyboard.  However, digital pianos certainly have their place in the piano world as they do provide several benefits to user.

  1. Portability
  2. Volume Control
  3. Voice Variations
  4. Bells and Whistles

Digital pianos should not be confused with portable keyboards.  keyboards typically have fewer keys than an 88 note piano, have no key velocity control, have lower quality tone  modules and as a result are much less expensive.  While some instructors will allow beginner students to use a keyboard for the first six months, most require the advancement to an acoustic piano or digital piano in order to develop dynamics, peddling and use of the full range of the keyboard.  Digital pianos are manufactured with varying levels of quality.  There are few areas to consider when choosing a digital piano .

  1. Touch
  2. Tone Source
  3. Functionality

As with acoustic pianos, digital pianos come in two style classes.  Digital verticals and digital grands.  With both, size is fairly universal, but inconsequential as to tonal quality.
