New Piano Makes

Whose Name Is On The Piano

The name on a piano is not necessarily the manufacturer.  Learn about manufacturer makes and stencil name makes and important information on comparison shopping.

To understand Piano makes, one must realize that pianos are not necessarily manufactured by the company whose name is on the piano.  There are two primary types of piano makes.  Manufacturer make pianos and stencil name pianos.  Manufacture makes are pianos which are manufactured solely by the actual company who owns the the pianos name rights and are most often labeled with the actual manufacturers name.  These are most often companies who have manufactured these pianos for many years with little or no change in company ownership or hierarchy. (i.e. Sauter pianos are manufactured in the Sauter factory for the Sauter family for four generations.)   Stencil name pianos are pianos whose name rights belong to a company who contracts another manufacturer to design and/or manufacture the piano for them.  Most often stencil name pianos are names that often resemble that of  more popular manufacturer makes or are actual former manufacturer makes of which have gone out of business and whose name rights have been purchased by the new company. (i.e. Wurlitzer Co. established in 1856 was sold to Baldwin piano and organ company in 1995 who contracted Samick to manufacture the Wurlitzer piano for them.)   This type of piano has grown significantly over the past few decades as mass production manufacturers have caused many smaller manufacturers to be unable to compete with price points.

Due to the fact that most piano manufacturers and distributors extend regional exclusive dealership rights,  most areas will only have one retail dealer for each make of piano.  This in conjunction with the numerous stencil name pianos in the marketplace makes it very difficult for the consumer to comparison shop.  Therefore, when comparing makes, it is imperative to have an understanding of which factory the piano was actually manufactured in.  You may find to completely different makes within your city that are actually identical or similar pianos manufactured by the same company for two separate companies.

Our piano make/manufacturer relation database is updated monthly and PianoUSA.com strives to maintain the most current and accurate data pertaining to piano manufacturers,  makes and specifications.  If you are a piano manufacturer  or distributor and discover inaccurate information within our database, please contact our data control department.
